PRESS RELEASE
Mentoring-in-Schools Program
The Enfield Public School Mentoring Program is currently seeking caring adult volunteers to mentor students in grades K-12.
Volunteers are paired with students who are experiencing difficulties with self-esteem, attendance, academics, and/or social issues. Mentors commit to spend one hour per week, one-on-one with their mentee at their schools for a minimum of one school year. This is NOT a tutoring program. Our current mentors use this time in any way which is special to the pair - playing games, doing crafts, sharing hobbies and talking about their week. Activities generally occur first thing in the morning or during the student’s lunch or recess time. This program is strictly school based.
No special skills are required. Enjoying children and being a good listener are most important. Our mentoring team has students, retirees, business people, stay-at-home parents, recent empty-nesters and firefighters. All Enfield schools have waiting lists for mentors, so we can work to place you in a school that is convenient to your home or workplace. We have an especially acute need for male mentors.
Volunteers must be 18 years or older. For the safety of our students, prospective mentors must provide a valid government-issued photo ID and be willing to be fingerprinted. Additionally, mentors must complete a formal application and attend a two-hour training session. These group training courses are regularly scheduled but special arrangements can be made for individuals or groups for more convenient times if needed.
The Enfield Mentoring Program assumes all costs involved with the background check. Mentors are provided with activity materials and continued support.
Our next scheduled training will be held on March 3, 2020 at the Administrative Offices, 1010 Enfield Street, Enfield, CT. Alternative trainings can be arranged to work around scheduling conflicts.
